This figure shows the temperature structure with depth across the eddy Mikalele on the left. The bulging up of cooler temperatures in the middle shows that water is moving up in the middle of the eddy. The figure on the right shows the concentration of chlorophyll with depth across Mikalele. The dense patches of chlorophyll in the middle suggest that nutrients from deeper water are making it to the shallower depths where sunlight can fuel phytoplankton growth. The data came from out trip across the eddy doing CTDs every ten miles. |
