TC-99-07 Lobster Cruise June 6-July 4, 1999

The lobster scientists had a terrific time exploring Tern Island on French Frigate Shoals. Upon exiting the boat, one of the Tern Island scientists gave our scientists a briefing on the island and the regulations (lower left). Our "teachers at sea" can be seen in the lower right taking pictures among the nesting terns on the island. Tern Island was originally used in WW II as a landing strip for U.S. fighter planes and the runway is still in use by the scientists there. The upper picture shows our lobster scientists walking the runway, looking at the thousands of sea birds that use this speck of an island to rear their young.
