These underwater photos were taken at Jarvis Island using the underwater digital video cameras. The upper two photos are 5- to 6-ft long gray reef sharks, the top predators in these reef ecosystems.. The many small, yellowish-orange fish in the upper right photo are a species of plankton-feeding basslet--observed by the thousands in the waters surrounding Jarvis--which provide food for many of the carnivorous fishes upon which the reef sharks feed. The photo on the lower left shows scientist Ray Boland taking notes while being towed behind one of our small boats at about 1 knot. The photo was taken from the video camera mounted on the other tow sled. The photo on the lower right shows scientist Frank Parrish during one of the drop dives on which large, predatory fishes were counted.
