Here, a bigeye tuna (thunnus obesus) has just
been hauled aboard using a sort of hammock on a frame. A foam pad is placed on deck under
the fish to reduce injury. When a fish hits the deck, a swarm of people begin the
measuring and tagging process. A conventional tag is being place in the muscle behind the
second dorsal fin, an archival tag is being surgically inserted into the abdomen, the
eyeball and pupil are being measured, and the overall length of the fish is being
measured. The faster the work gets done, the less stress on the animal and the better the
chance of survival.
