Pop-up tags can be inserted without bringing
the fish aboard. The tag is held on to the end of a pole with rubber bands and stuck into
the muscle of the fish. This sounds simple, but the fish is fighting on the line and the
ship is pitching and rolling. So the tagger is working just to stay standing while aiming
the pole at the writhing fish and judging when to take a shot, all at the same time. This
sub-adult broadbill swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was successfully tagged and experienced
less stress than if it was brought aboard.
