TC-99-09 Monk Seal Forage/Reef Fish Survey

Off the island of Kaula, we loaded our dive gear into the ship's boats and performed dives to video and document the fish diversity on the reef immediately off the island. One of the divers came back with a story of 3 octopi he saw displaying at one another (September is the time for mating for octopi in Hawaiian waters). The octopus has the ability to change color almost instantly, using this ability to match his surroundings. It can also dimple its skin allowing it to match the texture of the rock it's perched upon. When it realizes it has been spotted, it usually turns a really noticible (all white or all black) color and slides under the nearest ledge or rock.
