We are using a variety of different instruments this cruise. Pictured on the left, oceanographer Mike Sawyer inspects one of the current meters that we tested on a mooring last week. These current meters are very sophisticated, compact units. Usually they are deployed attached to submerged moorings and measure and record the ocean currents around them, as well as the salinity and temperature of the water. By adding sensors to the unit, you can easily increase the amount of data it can measure and record. We are also using a towable underwater camera to inspect and record the bottom type. The video camera's (not apparent in this photo) are fairly high tech and compact. The frame they are installed in is at best, a model piece of ingenuity. The frame is an aluminum frame, which has housed a variety of different instruments over the years. When we had problems with the cameras not facing forward as the unit was towed, the flaw was fixed by tie-wrapping a milk crate to the back of the frame to create more drag on the back end. The unit may not be much on looks and it's definitely the butt of various jokes, however it does the job and that is what is really important. |
