On the day we arrived at French Frigate Shoals, we staged a diver accident drill simulating the treatment of a diver with decompression sickness in the decompression chamber loaned to us by the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor. Our Executive Officer (LCDR Beaverson) volunteered to act as the patient and was placed on a gurney and slid into the chamber. Petty Officer Everett Hairston (U.S. Navy Diver Medical Technician) crawled into the chamber to join him and closed the hatch. Chief Bill Crider and Petty Officer Ron Hennig (both U.S. Navy) then operated the controls and pressurized the interior of the chamber to the equivalent of 60 feet of water depth. If LCDR Beaverson had a mild case of "the bends", this pressure would aid in shrinking the size of the gas bubbles that had formed in his blood, enabling his body to rid itself of the excess gas and stop any further damage being done by the bubbles blocking blood flow to tissues. |
