Necker Island
(25° 34' N - 164° 42' W) rises 277' (84 meters) above the ocean. The island was
used by Polynesians sometime before 1300 A.D. and was annexed (claimed) by the Provisional
Government of Hawaii on May 27, 1894. The annexation party of 1894 was surprised to
discover ruins of ceremonial stone structures (heiau) lining the island's narrow peaks and
they also found over a dozen intricately carved stone idols.
