Jarvis
Island (0° 22' S - 160° 03' W) This island is located about halfway
between Hawaii and the Cook Islands. Like many remote islands in the Pacific it
provides excellent nesting and foraging habitat for seabirds and thus was once utilized
for its guano. Millersville was established in 1935 as a weather station, but was
abandoned during World War 2. The settlement was briefly reinhabited in 1957 by
scientists in concurrence with the "International Geophysical Year".
