French Frigate
Shoals (23° 45' N - 166° 10' W) is about 30 miles across and contains a number of small
islands. The largest, Tern Island (pictured above), was enlarged during World War II to
create an air strip. The Coast Guard was on Tern Island for years, and now the island is
occupied by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and seasonally by National Marine
Fisheries Service marine mammal scientists.
