TC-99-05 Swordfish Oceanography

TC-99-05 Swordfish Oceanography
April 26-May 9, 1999

May 12, 1999    The TOWNSEND CROMWELL completed the CTD/Bottom Contour transects on May 7 and we transited to Hanalei Bay, Kauai for a day of ship cleaning. The bay is a protected inlet on the north side of the island of Kauai, formed where a river empties into the ocean. The bay is rimmed by mountains and in the distance on the face of the steep peaks, waterfalls can be seen cascading down into the forested valleys below. The weather has been terrific with flat calm seas and clear blue skies. It was this weather that enabled us to complete the cruise 1 day ahead of schedule. See photo collage 1 (upper right) and photo collage 2 (left). Photo collage 2
The ship arrived in Honolulu on May 9 and will be in port until May 15. During this time she will be restocked with fuel and food and repairs will be made to some of her equipment. Inports tend to be a busy time for the ship and her crew. The next cruise is a Protected Species Cruise which means there will be a lot of supplies, small boats, and personnel to go aboard. I (Brian Parker) will be on leave over the next cruise. The web site's updates and answers will be handled by LCDR Chris Beaverson, Executive Officer to the TOWNSEND CROMWELL. His e-mail address is: Chris_Beaverson%Cromwell@ccmail.rdc.noaa.gov
